Visualizing Pharmacological Diversity

Almost invariably, any given drug will have biological activity on indications other than the one that it is intended for. Often, these other activities will be in therapeutic areas unrelated to the labelled indication. This is illustrated with the interactive tool below that shows observed or reported biological activities for each compound with the activities clustered into 11 broad therapeutic areas.

Drag the slider above the figure to view individual drugs. Hover over the circles to see the specific indication or biological activity that they represent. The size of the circle represents the effect size, or in some cases weight of evidence, relative to all compounds that have been observed to modulate that indication. For example, although not widely accepted, some clinical evidence indicates that aspirin has therapeutic effects as an adjunct medicine in schizophrenia (Schmidt L et al, 2019. PMID: 31425623)

The presence of a biological activity does not necessarily mean that it is therapeutic. For example, morphine has a marked effect on reducing gastric motility and causing respiratory depression, though these are regarded as liabilities and not therapeutic effects.

Test Articles 1-22 are 22 randomly selected compounds that Melior has run through its theraTRACE® platform.
